Statistics suggest that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18. Ninety percent of children who are sexually abused are violated by someone they know and trust. This includes youth leaders of all types: teachers, coaches, ministers, mentors, counselors, parents and other youth.

The Lincoln County Child Abuse Prevention Council in partnership with the Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center are pleased to announce an important new prevention program in Southwest Nebraska: Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children sexual abuse prevention program.  This program takes a direct and comprehensive approach to the problem of sexual abuse within youth-serving organizations. A compelling video, the core of the curriculum, includes the stories of several courageous individuals who were victims of sexual abuse as children and who have contributed a great deal of time and effort as adults toward ending the cycle of abuse.

This program is ideal for the training of staff and volunteers in youth-serving organizations; it is also appropriate for the parents of children served by these organizations.  Our authorized facilitators have been fully equipped to implement this program. The facilitator will lead a 2.5 – 3 hour training session, including a discussion of the information presented in the video. Each participant also receives two pieces of curriculum, a workbook and Darkness to Light's 7 Steps to Protecting our Children. The cost of the training is $15 per person and mileage when applicable.  If the cost of the training is a concern please contact Matt Fosket for possible scholarship opportunities.

Sexual abuse has enormous costs: Children are hurt, the reputations of organizations are destroyed, insurance settlements are astronomical. Your organization can't afford to ignore it: Protect their only childhood.

Please choose to take action in the prevention of child sexual abuse and schedule a Darkness to Light Stewards of Children training today.

Adults Resolving Child Sexual Abuse in Community

Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children is a revolutionary evidence-based sexual abuse prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, and motivates them to courageous action. The Stewards of Children program is designed for organizations that serve children and youth, and any/all adults interested in protecting children.

The curriculum can be used by organizations and corporations who are:
  • Seeking evidence-based training for staff and volunteers in the prevention of child sexual abuse.
  • Wanting to make a difference in their community by educating adults about the protection of children.
  • Needing to respond to insurance requirements regarding child protection.
The program includes:
  • An interactive workbook and a 7 Steps Guide for each participant containing the full program curriculum
  • An accompanying 1 ¼ hour DVD integrating segments of sexual abuse survivors relating their stories of violation and healing, with segments from the author of the curriculum and from professionals who interface daily with the problem of sexual abuse
  • Opportunity for discussion about important issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues within organizations that serve children and adolescents.
After training participants will:
  • Understand the facts of child sexual abuse - incidence rates and effects on individuals and society
  • Understand how child sexual abuse happens
  • Understand that adults are responsible for the protection of children
  • Understand the importance of screening staff/volunteers who work with children and adolescents
  • Understand the importance of a well conceived one-adult/one-child policy
  • Have resources to react responsibly to incidents of child sexual abuse
  • Understand the proactive role youth-serving organizations need to take to protect children and educate their communities about child sexual abuse

How past participants will use the information they learned:
  • "I will be more aware and pay attention more.  I will inform other people and will be more prepared if I ever encounter abuse."
  • "Share this information with all organizations I am a part of that work with children."
  • "To share and find out more information about the policies in the places I work."
  • "I have the tools and knowledge to recognize and do something about child sexual abuse."
  • "I will use it to be more aware of the signals of what to look for."
  • "Since I have been more educated, I will be more aware."
  • "By being more aware of the children and situations."
Participant's opinions of the strengths of the training:
  • "The information with testimonials."
  • "The movie was very enlightening.  Workbook was full of information I didn't know."
  • "Interactive and the videos were powerful."
